The best rotary brushes and wash heads for 2026

Some surfaces should never meet a jet: paintwork, soft wood, plastic garden furniture, a caravan side. A water-fed brush cleans them by contact, at low pressure, without lifting the finish. We compare bristle softness, rotary against fixed heads, and telescopic handles — where reach usually costs rigidity.

Which one for which need

Not scratching paintwork

A bristle that is too stiff holds a grain of sand and walks it across the panel. The stated bristle hardness decides whether the brush goes on a car or only on concrete.

Covering a car door in one pass

A narrow brush doubles the number of passes and the overlap marks. The stated brushing diameter says how many passes a whole car takes.

Who each type suits

Car washing
A rotary brush fed by the machine avoids direct pressure on the bodywork. It is the accessory that makes a pressure washer genuinely usable on a vehicle.
Garden furniture
Plastic and woven resin take a direct jet badly and brushing very well. That is where the brush saves the most time.
Windows and conservatories
A soft-water brush on a pole replaces the ladder and the bucket, provided you accept air drying, which sometimes leaves marks with hard water.

The trade-offs to weigh

Brushing against pressure
The brush cleans by contact, not by impact: slower on ingrained dirt, infinitely safer on a delicate surface. The two methods do not replace one another.
Rotary against fixed
The rotary works on its own and sets its own pace; the fixed one needs the movement and lets you insist exactly where you need to. On a large flat surface, the rotary wins.
Bristle softness against effectiveness
Soft bristles scratch nothing and attack nothing. Firm bristles lift the dirt and mark tired varnish. Hardness is chosen on the surface, not on the hoped-for result.

Questions buyers ask

Does a rotary brush scratch bodywork?

Not by itself. What scratches is a grain of sand caught in the bristles. Rinsing the brush before and during the wash practically removes the risk.

Does the brush work with every machine?

It has to match the lance connector and the permitted pressure. A brush rated for 130 bar fitted to a 160 bar machine wears fast and can come loose.

Is a product needed with the brush?

On a car, a shampoo applied beforehand markedly improves the result and reduces friction. On furniture, water alone is usually enough.

How do I clean the brush itself?

Rinse it with clean water after each use and let it dry bristles upwards. A brush stored damp and squashed loses its shape and holds particles.

Does a brush replace a nozzle?

No, it complements it. Stripping hard surfaces remains the nozzle's job; the brush handles what the nozzle would damage.

Can it be used on wood?

Yes, and it is often the best method: it cleans without raising the fibres, unlike a direct jet which leaves greyed wood rough.

Do the bristles wear out?

They lie down and shorten over time. A brush whose bristles no longer stand back up cleans much less well and should be replaced.

Is the brush driven by the water or by a motor?

On these accessories the jet drives the brush: without enough flow it simply sits still. The stated minimum flow is therefore a condition, not an indication.

What to remember

The brush is what lets you use a pressure washer on what it would otherwise damage: car, furniture, wood. Choose bristle hardness according to the surface, rinse it before every use, and treat it as a consumable.
