Rinse first with the flat jet, foam second, let it dwell, then brush and rinse. The tool makes that sequence quick; it does not change it. Brushing a dry, gritty panel scratches it whatever the bristles are made of.
A separate foam cannon makes thicker foam. A separate brush is gentler and bigger. This does all three adequately and removes the walking — which for most people is what decides whether the car gets washed at all.
