The best mop pads and microfibre covers for 2026

Pads are cheap, wear out invisibly and quietly halve the performance of an expensive machine. We cover steam mop pads by model fit, floor washer rollers, and general microfibre — with the two things that end a pad's life: matted fibres that no longer hold water, and fabric softener, which coats them and stops them absorbing.

Which one for which need

Lasting fifty washes

Looped microfibre loses its loops in a tumble dryer and no longer scrapes anything. The stated number of washes is the only measure of a pad's real cost.

Gripping the head you own

A hook-and-loop pad does not hold on a clip plate, and the reverse is also true. The stated plate dimensions are the first sort, before the fabric.

Who each type suits

Daily steam mopping
Three pads at minimum. A saturated pad stops cleaning and puts back what it picked up — it is the consumable that decides the result, not the machine.
Large area
Number outranks individual quality: changing pad halfway does more for cleanliness than a premium pad used to the end.
Delicate floors
A long-fibre pad holds more water and suits laminate badly. On those floors, a thin, well-wrung pad is better.

The trade-offs to weigh

Thickness against drying
A thick pad absorbs more and leaves the floor damper. On tiles that is neither here nor there; on laminate it is what swells the joints.
Microfibre against cotton
Microfibre captures fine dust better and takes fewer hot washes. Cotton lasts and holds less.
Generic against brand
The fixings change from one model to another. A badly fitted generic pad comes off mid-pass or covers the edges of the plate poorly.

Questions buyers ask

How many pads do I need?

Three at minimum for an average home. A pad loses its effectiveness well before the end of a ground floor, and carrying on with it spreads more than it cleans.

How should they be washed?

In the machine, at 60 °C, without fabric softener. Softener coats the microfibre and makes it lose its capture ability, permanently.

How long do they last?

Several dozen washes for a quality pad. They are replaced when the fibres flatten and the pad slides instead of gripping.

Can they go in the tumble dryer?

At low temperature only. High heat partly melts synthetic fibres and leaves them smooth, and therefore useless.

Are generic pads suitable?

If the fixing matches exactly. Velcro systems are the most forgiving; clip or pocket fixings are specific to each brand.

Why does my floor stay cloudy?

A saturated pad, or product residue built up in the fibres. A wash without softener, on an empty load, often fixes it.

Should the pad be dampened first?

On a steam mop, no: the steam sees to it. On a conventional flat mop, a slightly damp pad grips dust markedly better.

Is a differently coloured pad any use?

Yes, to stop the kitchen being done after the toilet. Multi-coloured packs make that sorting visible, and that is the only real benefit of a colour set.

What to remember

The pad is the real consumable of floor cleaning, and the one people replace last. Three pads at minimum, washing at 60 °C without softener, and replacement as soon as the fibres flatten.
