Limescale is the single most common cause of death for a steam machine, and it builds fastest in exactly the households that most need one. It depends entirely on water hardness and frequency of use. In hard water with weekly use, every two to three months; in soft water, once or twice a year is enough.
It dissolves limescale but can attack seals and certain alloys, and several manufacturers explicitly rule it out. On an appliance under warranty, it is a pointless risk.
The heat-up time lengthens, the machine whistles or crackles, the steam becomes irregular. Those signs appear long after the scaling began.
