Kärcher SC 1
3 bar · 3 min heat-up · 200 ml · 1.58 kg
A handheld for taps, tiles and hobs — and honest about the twenty square metres it covers.
Best for: Taps, sinks, wall tiles, mirrors, extractor hoods and hobs — detail work, not floors
≈ 71 €
Heat instead of chemicals
Steam cleans grout, hobs, taps and mattresses with heat and water, and nothing else — which is the whole argument for it. The dividing line is boiler pressure: below about 3 bar the steam is wet and pushes dirt around, above it the steam is dry and lifts it. We compare pressure, heat-up time, and whether the tank can be refilled without waiting for the boiler to cool.

3.2 bar · 6.5 min heat-up · 1 l tank · 1 500 W
The same coverage as the SC 3 for less money, and six and a half minutes of waiting to get there.
Best for: Planned cleaning sessions rather than quick jobs — where a six-minute wait is acceptable because you were going to be there an hour anyway
≈ 140 €
4 bar · 2 min heat-up · removable 2 l tank · 1 500 W
Four bar and a two-litre removable tank: pressure from a boiler, refilling like a kettle.
Best for: Whole-house sessions — several rooms in a row, where pressure and a large water supply both matter
≈ 200 €
3.5 bar · 30 s heat-up · 1 l refillable tank · 1 900 W
The one that refills like a kettle: thirty seconds to steam and no waiting for a boiler to cool.
Best for: Kitchens and bathrooms cleaned regularly, where the machine is picked up for twenty minutes at a time
≈ 170 €
5 bar · two-chamber boiler · unlimited runtime · 1 100 W
Five bar and a boiler that never has to stop — the domestic machine closest to a professional one.
Best for: Large houses, tiled floors throughout, or anyone cleaning several rooms in one session every week
≈ 345 €
Grout and limescale give way to temperature, not to scrubbing. It is the steam pressure that decides whether the deposit comes off on the first pass or the tenth.
A small tank forces a stop of several minutes while the pressure comes down. Over an hour-long session, capacity changes everything.
For a few cleans a year, a short heat-up beats a big machine: you use it because it is ready, not because it is powerful.
Provided it reaches a sufficient temperature at the nozzle outlet and is given dwell time. A quick pass cleans without disinfecting — the boiler temperature says nothing about what reaches the surface.
Untreated wood, laminate with open joints, leather, painted plaster and delicate varnished surfaces. Heat swells what water alone would barely have dampened.
It markedly extends the boiler's life in a hard-water area. Some manufacturers require it and void the warranty without it; others tolerate tap water with regular descaling.
A steam mop is made for floors and nothing else. A steam cleaner with a hose handles grout, windows, sanitaryware and fabrics — at the price of greater bulk and a longer heat-up.
It depends as much on the flow setting as on the capacity. At full flow, a medium tank rarely lasts more than twenty minutes; at reduced flow it doubles.
No, unless the manufacturer explicitly says so. Detergent in a boiler fouls the pipework and can throw out irritant vapours.
No. It lifts and dissolves; it does not suck. A floor must be dusted first, otherwise steam turns the dust into mud.
Draining after every long use and periodic descaling. A scaled boiler takes longer to heat and ends up whistling — that is the first sign.
A steam cleaner is judged on pressure and on heat-up time, in that order if you clean for long stretches, in the reverse order if you clean often and briefly. The number of accessories does not enter the decision: three of them will do ninety per cent of the work.
A figure has to be published by four machines in five to earn its column. Below that, we would be comparing empty cells.
