Polti Vaporetto SV460 Double review

A steam mop with a handheld that unclips from it — two machines, one price, and one compromise.

The bottom line The pragmatic choice for a small home: fastest to steam, and the only machine here that splits into two.

The SV460 Double is a steam mop whose top half unclips and becomes a handheld. Fifteen seconds to steam, a removable tank, seventeen accessories and an anti-scale filter with a spare.

Two jobs, one cupboard

Most households that buy a steam cleaner want two things: to do the kitchen floor without a bucket, and to attack the taps, the hob and the tile joints. Buying two machines is the clean answer and takes two shelves. This is the other answer, and for a flat it is usually the right one.

The compromise is real and worth naming: the handheld is bulkier than a dedicated one like the Kärcher SC 1, and there is no boiler here delivering four or five bar. It is a fast, wet-ish steam machine rather than a high-pressure one.

Fifteen seconds changes behaviour

Nothing on this page starts faster. That matters more than it sounds: a machine ready before you have found the cloth gets used for five-minute jobs, and five-minute jobs are most of cleaning. The whole argument for the Kärcher SC 3 over the SC 2 is the same one, and here it is taken further.

The scale filter, and the running cost

An anti-scale filter is supplied with a spare. Read that as Polti telling you it is a consumable. Before choosing any steam machine, look up what its filters or cartridges cost and whether they are still made for the model — it is the cost that decides whether the machine reaches year five, and it never appears in the purchase price.

Accessory counts

Seventeen accessories sounds decisive and is mostly packaging. The pieces that get used are the floor head, the cloths, the detail nozzle and a brush. Choose between machines on heat-up, pressure, tank arrangement and running cost; treat the accessory count as a tiebreak at most.

What we like, and what we don't

Strengths

  • Fifteen seconds to steam — the fastest machine in this group
  • The handheld detaches, so one purchase covers floors and detail work
  • Anti-scale filter supplied with a spare, which few machines at this price bother with
  • One reference on all six Amazon stores

Compromises

  • A 2-in-1 is a compromise at both jobs: less pressure than a boiler machine, more bulk than a handheld
  • The listing does not publish a pressure figure
  • Seventeen accessories is a number, not a capability

Questions people actually ask

Is a 2-in-1 a false economy?

Not here, but know what you are buying. Detaching the handheld gives you a genuinely usable detail tool, which is more than most upright steam mops offer. What you give up is the pressure of a dedicated boiler machine and some of the compactness of a dedicated handheld. For one household with one cupboard, that trade is usually right.

No pressure figure — does that matter?

It makes direct comparison with the boiler machines on this page impossible, and we are not going to infer one. What the listing does give is heat-up time, power and the accessory list, which is enough to place it: this is a fast, convenient floor machine that also does taps, not a substitute for a 5 bar boiler.

What is the anti-scale filter for?

It treats the water before it is heated, which slows the scale that eventually blocks the element. Polti supplying a spare in the box is an admission that it is a consumable — check what replacements cost before buying, because on cheap machines the filters sometimes cost more per year than the machine deserves.
