Kärcher SC 2 Upright review

A steam mop with a wood setting and a tile setting — the distinction most machines pretend does not exist.

The bottom line The steam mop that acknowledges floors differ. If your home mixes tile and sealed wood, that is the whole argument.

The SC 2 Upright is a floor machine and nothing else: thirty seconds to steam, a 0.4 l refillable tank, and — the reason it is here — two steam settings, marked wood and tile at the handle.

Why one steam setting is a design flaw

Grout wants water and heat. Engineered wood wants as little water as possible and none in the joints. A steam mop with a single output is tuned for the first job and used on the second, which is how people end up with lifted edges on a floor they were trying to look after.

Two settings do not make steam safe on everything — nothing does — but they make one machine correct on two of the most common domestic floors.

Refilling, and the tank you should expect

Four hundred millilitres is small, and Kärcher quotes about 50 m² from it. The mitigation is that the tank fills while the machine is hot, so a large floor means a pause at the tap rather than a pause for the machine to cool. That is the same distinction that separates the SC 3 from the SC 2 in the cylinder range, and it is worth more than any figure on the box.

Scale, again

The descaling cartridge is the specification that decides how long the machine lives. Steam mops in this price band usually leave you to descale manually, or say nothing at all; a cartridge treats the water before it is heated. It is a consumable — the cost and availability of replacements is a fair thing to check before buying.

What it will not do

There are no detail nozzles, no hose, no round brush. Taps, hobs, shower screens and extractor hoods are outside its remit — that is the cylinder machines’ work, or a handheld like the SC 1. Buying an upright and expecting to do the bathroom taps with it is the mismatch to avoid.

What we like, and what we don't

Strengths

  • Two steam levels, marked by floor type — the setting that protects sealed wood
  • Refillable while working, so a whole floor is one session
  • Descaling cartridge fitted, which most steam mops omit
  • One reference on all six Amazon stores

Compromises

  • 0.4 l tank: about 50 m² per fill, so a large floor means refilling
  • Floors only — no detail nozzles, unlike the cylinder machines
  • Corded, with the reach that implies

Questions people actually ask

Is steam safe on my floor?

On sealed tile, porcelain and vinyl, yes. On engineered or laminate flooring it depends entirely on the joints and the finish: steam that gets into an open joint swells the core, and that damage is permanent. Use the lower setting, keep moving, and test in a corner behind a door before doing a whole room. On unsealed timber, do not use steam at all.

What do the two settings actually change?

The amount of steam delivered to the pad. The tile setting wets more, which is what grout and stone want; the wood setting delivers less, so the surface dries almost immediately behind the head. A single-setting steam mop is set for the harder job, which is exactly the wrong choice on a wood floor.

How is it different from the SC 2 Deluxe?

This is an upright mop: floors only, thirty seconds to heat, refillable mid-job. The SC 2 Deluxe is a cylinder machine with hoses and nozzles for taps, tiles and hobs, but takes six and a half minutes to heat. Same family name, different jobs — choose by what you actually clean most.
