The purpose is not the appearance. Foam holds detergent against a vertical panel long enough to break the bond between grit and paint. When it is rinsed away it takes most of the abrasive material with it — so the contact wash that follows is far less likely to scratch.
Wheels first, with a dedicated brush. Rinse top-down. Foam, dwell, rinse again. Then the mitt, two buckets, and never a dropped one. That sequence matters more than the cannon.
Foam cannons are sold per connector — Kärcher, Nilfisk, Bosch or M22. Buying the wrong one is the most common error in this family.
