Nine kilos lifts into a car boot and hangs on a garage wall. It also presses the brushes into the ground less firmly than a heavier machine, which shows on rough surfaces. Brush height adjustment covers most of the difference.
The reason sweepers end up unused is that they are awkward objects to store. A handle that folds turns a 1.2-metre machine into something that fits behind a door.
Wet leaves mat around the roller and stop it turning. Dry leaves, grit and general path debris are swept quickly; anything wet needs a rake, a blower, or a dry day.

On smooth concrete, no. On rough or uneven ground, weight helps keep the brushes in contact, and a very light machine can skip. Brush height adjustment compensates for most of it — set it lower for grit and higher for leaves.
