Kärcher AD 2 review

A metal drum and a filter you can shake clear — the minimum a fireplace vacuum has to be.

The bottom line The honest entry: it does the one job properly and does not pretend the drum is bigger than it is.

The AD 2 is the small Kärcher ash vacuum: a 14-litre metal container, filter cleaning, and a clear statement that it is for cold ash.

Why ash needs its own machine

Ash is fine, abrasive and, for far longer than it looks, warm. A household vacuum’s bag turns it into airborne dust; a workshop vacuum’s plastic drum and cartridge filter offer no protection if something in that ash is still alive. A dedicated machine answers both: a metal body that will not melt, and a filter arrangement designed for a material that blinds filters faster than anything else in the house.

The filter is the whole game

Ash blinds a filter in minutes, and a blinded filter means no suction and a hot motor. The cleaning mechanism is therefore not a convenience here — it is what lets the machine finish a grate in one go.

Fourteen litres, honestly

For a stove cleaned weekly, fourteen litres is a couple of sessions. For an open fire burning every evening through the winter, it is one. The AD 4 Premium above it takes the same approach with more capacity and a flame-retardant body.

The rule that matters more than any specification

Twenty-four hours cold, minimum. Everything else on this page is a preference; this one is the difference between a clean hearth and a fire in a plastic-wheeled drum in the corner of a room.

What we like, and what we don't

Strengths

  • Metal container — the specification that separates an ash vacuum from a workshop one
  • Filter cleaning, which matters more on ash than on any other material
  • Doubles as a dry vacuum for coarse dirt

Compromises

  • Fourteen litres fills quickly on a wood-burning household
  • Cold ash only, without exception
  • Not sold on Amazon's US store

Questions people actually ask

How cold does the ash have to be?

Completely — the fire out and the ash cold right through, which in practice means at least 24 hours after the last burn. Embers survive under a grey surface far longer than they look as though they should, and a drum full of ash with air rushing through it is exactly the environment an ember needs. No domestic ash vacuum is rated for hot ash, whatever the packaging implies.

Why not use my workshop vacuum?

Two reasons. Ash is abrasive and fine enough to pass a standard cartridge filter and reach the motor, and a plastic drum with a plastic hose end offers nothing if an ember does survive. An ash vacuum has a metal body, a metal hose end and a filter arrangement built for exactly this material.
