The SC 3 Deluxe is built around one decision, and it is the right one: you can refill it while it is running. Thirty seconds from cold, 3.5 bar, a one-litre tank that takes water like a kettle.
The boiler problem, solved
Traditional steam cleaners heat a sealed pressure vessel. That gives high pressure and a hard stop: when the water runs out, the machine has to lose its pressure and cool before it can be opened. In practice that is ten to fifteen minutes of standing in a half-cleaned bathroom.
A refillable design trades a little pressure for continuous work. On paper the Polti machines further up this page win on bar; in a kitchen, on a Saturday morning, this is the one that finishes the job.
What the coverage figure means
Kärcher quotes 75 m² per tank. Treat that as a comparison number: it assumes the floor tool, continuous steam and an ordinary floor. Detail work with the point nozzle uses steam far faster, and a heavily soiled floor is cleaned twice.
Limescale is what kills these machines
The integrated descaling cartridge is the most important thing in the specification and the least discussed. Steam cleaners die of scale, not of wear, and the harder your water the sooner. The cartridge treats the water before the boiler; it is also a consumable, so it is worth checking the price and availability of replacements for your model before you commit to the brand.
The hygiene claim, as stated
Kärcher states the machine removes up to 99.999 % of viruses and bacteria from hard surfaces, with the asterisks that always accompany such figures — specific organisms, laboratory conditions, a defined technique. It is the manufacturer’s claim, quoted as such. What is not in dispute is that steam cleans without adding detergent, which is the reason most people buy one.

Why does a refillable tank matter so much?
Because a sealed boiler has to depressurise and cool before it can take water — typically ten to fifteen minutes, in the middle of a job. This machine takes water like a kettle while it is working, so the session lasts as long as you do. It is the single most practical difference between steam cleaners in this price band.
Is 3.5 bar enough for grout?
For grout that is cleaned periodically, yes, with the detail nozzle and the round brush. For grout that has gone black over years, pressure helps but dwell time and a brush help more — and no domestic steam cleaner replaces regrouting when the surface itself has gone.
What does the descaling cartridge do?
It treats the water before it reaches the boiler, which is where limescale forms and where it eventually kills the machine. In a hard-water area it is the difference between a machine that lasts and one that furs up in a couple of years.
