Kärcher SC 1 review

A handheld for taps, tiles and hobs — and honest about the twenty square metres it covers.

The bottom line The right answer to a specific question: steam for the small, fiddly, greasy things. Judge it on weight and reach, not on coverage.

The SC 1 weighs 1.58 kg, holds 200 ml, reaches 3 bar in three minutes and covers a quoted 20 m² before it needs more water. Every one of those numbers says the same thing: this is a detail tool.

What a handheld is for

Taps and the limescale ring behind them. The tile joint above the bath. The extractor hood filter. A hob where something boiled over a week ago. Mirrors. These are jobs measured in minutes, done at arm’s length, often above shoulder height — and there the 1.58 kg matters far more than any pressure figure.

Where it stops

Twenty square metres per fill sounds like a room and is not. Detail work at close range consumes steam quickly, and refilling means waiting for the machine to be safe to open. Buying this expecting to steam a kitchen floor is the most common way to be disappointed by it, and the specification says so plainly if you read the tank size before the price.

Three minutes, and what that changes

Three minutes is short for a pressurised machine and long for an impulse. In practice you fill it, switch it on, and go and find the cloths — by the time the accessories are to hand it is ready. It is not the thirty-second convenience of the refillable SC 3, and at this size and price that is a fair trade.

Technique, briefly

Steam softens; the cloth removes. Hold the nozzle close and give it a couple of seconds, then wipe — people who are disappointed by steam usually keep the nozzle moving as though it were a spray. On grease, work from the top down so the loosened film does not run over what you have already cleaned.

What we like, and what we don't

Strengths

  • 1.58 kg — light enough to hold above your head against an extractor hood
  • Three bar in a machine that stores in a drawer
  • One reference on all six Amazon stores

Compromises

  • 200 ml is roughly twenty square metres, then it stops
  • No floor tool: this is not a machine for cleaning a room
  • Three minutes of heat-up for a job that may take two

Questions people actually ask

Can I clean a floor with it?

Not sensibly. There is no floor head in the box and the 200 ml tank covers a quoted twenty square metres — a small bathroom, once, if nothing else is cleaned. It is a detail tool, and Kärcher positions it as one. For floors the SC 2 Upright or a steam mop is the right machine.

Is it strong enough for an oven or an extractor hood?

For grease that is soft, yes: steam and a cloth lift it without oven cleaner, which is the point. For carbonised deposits, steam softens the surface but the removal is still mechanical, and a plastic scraper does more than more steam. Work top-down and keep a cloth in the other hand — steam moves grease, it does not evaporate it.

What water should I use?

Tap water is what the manual expects, with the descaling interval it specifies. In a hard-water area, distilled water in a machine this size is cheap enough to be practical and removes the scale problem entirely — 200 ml at a time is not a lot of water to buy.
